DAAP Slap'd Music Video
DAAP Slap'd came about when my classmates and I were given the class assignment to create a marketing device for potential DAAP (Design, Architecture, Art and Planning) students. The choices were vast, but my team (myself, Maria Fox, Sarah Meek, and Rachael Chiseck) decided to go a bit crazy and out of the norm by writing and producing a song and music video that would showcase how fun and design-serious our college is.
None of us Digital Designers knew how to write music, let alone come up with a fun tune so we pulled in some outside talent, Josh Whelchel (Poolside). My friend is a professional video game composer, and with a little persuasion, he was glad to write us some music and help refine our horribly out of sync lyrics.
With the music and lyrics locked down, it came time for Maria and I to sing. Luckily I have a history of vocal lessons and high school theater and luckily Maria is just a wacky, fun kind of person. I sang, she rapped, we sang together and in the end we had DAAP Slap'd.
We became night owls while filming the music video in DAAP, waiting until everyone had left the building so that we could run around with our video camera and boom box. Rachael and Sarah were fantastic camera-women. With all of the footage of Maria and I captured, it came time to start splicing and sewing clips in Final Cut. I was responsible for editing the video while Maria took charge of the color correction. Syncing the movement of our lips to the vocals in the music proved difficult, but overall, the editing process was a lot of fun and the result is our goofy portrait of DAAP.
I don't know if over 9,000 total internet views is something to brag about, but it certainly makes me feel proud of the work we did, despite how goofy I might look in it! Oh taste of stardom...just kidding. But we were good enough for the Dean of DAAP to recognize us and show our video during his speech out our annual DAAP Works show.
